In 1864, General Philip Sheridan's army passed through Kern County while campaigning against Ulysses S. Grant's forces in the American Civil War and stopped at Porterville for supplies and lodgings before continuing their journey north. After the war ended and General Sheridan returned home, he ordered his army to move on without stopping at Porterville again. In 1916–1917 Jens Erikson built a military airfield called East Bay Field near present-day Porterville to serve as staging area for Operation Neptune's Spear during World War I; however, this airfield was not operational until 1918 when it became known as North Bay Field due to its location north of East Bay Field.
