Porterville is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 7,070 at the 2010 census. Porterville is home to four schools - Porterville High School, Cottonwood Middle School, Central Elementary School and Southridge Elementary School. The city is also home to two businesses - Home Depot and Lowe's. The first Europeans to visit Porterville were Spanish traders in 1769. Henry Dominguez named it "Alcaldía de Potrero" (place of rock). In 1821, José Maria Segundo founded the Rancho Santa Cruz del Oro Surveyor Department here as part of his efforts to improve land grants for settlers east of Sacramento River. On February 26, 1822, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna y Costilla explored this area and named it Villa San Marcos de Padua after his father-in-law Manuel Nieto y Costilla. The townsite was platted on December 12, 1824 by Joseph Hahn as part of a grant from Mexico City to Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1847 Jens Jensen gave up his claim on Rancho Los Coyotes Indian Reservation in order to homestead in Porterville proper; he became known as one of the early settlers thereabouts. A post office called Porterville was established in 1865; it moved from its original location near Springdale about a mile northwest of town center in 1903 when railroad tracks extended into town from northbound I-5 just south of town limits; the original Post Office building still stands today within town limits adjacent to Home Depot Hardware store on East Main Street between Porter Avenue and Samson Road. In 1890s many farmers began growing cotton because it could be grown more easily than other crops around that time due to its warm climate and fertile soil inside the valleys around Porterville where irrigated farming had been popular for many years before then due mostly to irrigation projects built by Francisco Márquez & Co., Sánchez brothers etc., which included an extensive system including canals dug through hillsides with variable depths (now known as “the old dry ditch”), deep ditches paralleling river courses throughout most or all parts of valley & irrigating fields directly or through long channels diverted off main rivers & flowing into big reservoirs situated at various points central & eastern Vallejo County: some are still extant (& visible) such as White Sands Lake near junction Of US 101 & Rte 476; others have been destroyed by recent development ( eg Martinez Dam); but plenty remainWatchett Reservoir has also been heavily developed recently (& visible only from air) Census data: Population 707 As reported Decennial 2010

Porterville is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 725 at the 2010 census. Porterville is a part of the Sierra Vista–Chico, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Porterville is found in 1853 when it was spelled "Pottervil". The name may be derived from Potters Valley which was located to the south of the present-day town and drained by the rivers Porter and San Pedro. In 1872, John Randolph began farming land that would later comprise what is now Porterville. He named his holdings Randolph Ranch after his father-in-law, James Randolph (1767-1847). In 1881, Charles Noyes bought 150 acres of land east of present day Porterville from John Randolph for $4 per acre. This area became known as Noyes Rancho. Noyes had been born in Ireland and arrived in America in 1831 as an Irishman with his family. After many years living in various parts of California he decided to settle down near Sacramento where he founded what would become Sacramento County. While there he met local pioneer George Wickersham who helped him buy some additional property east ofpresent day Porterville for $10 per acre (this area would become known as Wickersham Rancho). From here on out Noyes’s ranching operations were focused on providing pastureland for cattle drives to market and raising hay for local markets; consequently, much important early history took place right here atRandolph Ranch headquarters! By 1915 Noyes had sold all but 2/3rds of his original rancho land to developers including JMW Steiner who built Fox Hills Elementary School today (and lost most if not all their development money!). Today only a few aging trees remain standing on this once bustling community - reminders that before modern transportation methods got here things did pretty much just stay where they were!
Porterville was founded in 1853 by Captain John Porter and his wife Jane. The town grew rapidly due to the trade of goods brought overland from southern California by the Gold Rush. The first post office was established in Porterville in 1855, and the first store opened on Main Street in 1865. In 1879, Porterville became a city when it was annexed by Los Angeles. In 1916, the City of Porterville merged with Valley Park to form Riverside-Valley Park. In 1951, Riverside-Valley Park was renamed Porterville after General Leonard Wood's visit to the area.
