Porter and other early settlers as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The first store in Porterville was built on North Main Street in 1853 by John W. Porter and his brother-in-law George Dickinson. In 1871, Boston resident Cyrus McCormick opened a millinery shop in Porterville, which became one of the town's major employers until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1906, grocer Jens Meyer bought land adjacent to what is now Chamberlin Elementary School for $10 per acre (0.50 acres = 100 cents). He began building what would become known as "Meyer's Store" on Custom Road just south of Center Street; the store continued to be operated from that location until it burned down in 1924. By 1909, Meyer had constructed a two-story brick schoolhouse on West Third Street (now Chamberlin Middle School). On December 1st that year, he also erected an old blacksmith shop adjacent to his store for use as a community meeting hall; this structure still stands today and serves as the town's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The post office moved from downtown Porterville to what is now Chamberlin Middle School around 1915; when it closed its doors again around 1968 there were no mailboxes remaining within the building so mail was delivered through front door only into individual homes throughout much of rural Kern County during those years! On January 1st 1907 Charles Fenton established "Fenton’s grocery" across Court Avenue from Pinehurst Hotel - soon afterward renamed 'Fenton’s Department Store'. It remained open until it closed its doors again around 1978 due to financial problems unique to that era! A large fire destroyed most of downtown business including four blocks worth of businesses between East Fourth and Fifth Streets sometime before or after Christmas 1906 while forces were fighting an insurrection against Spanish rule near San Bernardino! The main street running through downtown business district several hundred yards long was rebuilt but not reopened until many years later

It became part of the United States in 1846 as part of California's newly formed state. The first settlers to Porterville were Emigrant George Withers and his family who arrived from Georgia on July 3, 1847. They built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. The first school in Porterville was located on East Main Street between School and Home Streets. In 1848, three teachers (Fenton Clements, John Hennigan and James Sutherlin) took up residence in a small wooden building which served as both school and home until May 12th, 1850 when they moved to a larger frame building which they erected on Cemetery Road near present day Davis Avenue. On February 14th, 1850 Mrs. Fenton Clements gave birth to her fourth child – a son named George Washington Clements Jr.. After leaving school he worked several odd jobs including farm work before becoming an employee of the American Pacific Railroad Company’s depot at Porterville Station where he remained until his retirement in 1904 In 1865 Seth Sprague founded Sprague & Sprague Dry Goods store at corner of Depot Square with other early business partners such as Neely & Cooks millinery department store across Depot square . That company closed its doors after just one year followed by Sprague Hardware Store that operated from 1870-1972 . In 1886 Oscar Guggenheim bought Sprague Hardware Store then changed its name to Guggenheim’s Department Store before closing its doors again in 1984 On November 15th 1902 Mayor Golda Meir visited Sprague’s Department Store followed by President Theodore Roosevelt who also stopped by later that day while en route to Ramona . Roosevelt observed that “the old hardware [was] still there but it had not been used for many years because all the new things had come into use” He donated $5 for each article sold to be put into storage or given away to needy families across America during his presidency In 1924 Jens Jensen opened Nordstrom's second location adjacent to Sprague's Department store finally putting an end to this local tradition

Porterville was founded in 1887 by George Porter and his wife, Emma. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in California. The City of Porterville was incorporated on November 20, 1889. Porterville's first post office opened in December 1888. The population of Porterville grew rapidly from 300 residents in 1890 to 1,500 by 1912. In 1912, the City Council voted to annex neighbouring communities of San Bernardino and Riverside County for a total population of 10,000 people. In 1915, the United States Congress passed a bill called the National Defense Authorization Act which provided for military buildup in California and other Western states; this led to increased demand for goods and services from the Central Valley region and resulted in an increase in businesses licenses and employees within Porterville. The 1920s were a time of great growth for Porterville with new housing developments being built along First Street including Cedar Crest Estates (1922), Pine View Homes (1927), Colonial Heights (1928), Elkhorn Park (1929) and Willowwood (1930). However, World War II interrupted these development efforts as war brought more jobs into town than could be absorbed by the existing housing stock. After the war ended, many businesses closed or moved away as taxes decreased and competition from other citiesrose; however, some local firms such as J H Wray & Sons found new opportunities after deregulation occurred during that decade. Many locals served during WWII with distinction such as Mayor Lamar Gentry who rose through ranks at US Naval Air Station Imperial Beach before becoming mayor; Johnnie Mathis became CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation after serving two terms as Mayor; General James Mattis commanded I Corps during campaign season while also holding various civic offices including Mayoralty twice; all three men held onto their seat until they retired at different ages later that year without leaving office until 1990 when Gentry announced his candidacy again after 16 years absence then won handily despite no opposition
