Porterville is a small town in California, located on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley. The town was founded in 1849 by John Porter and his wife, Ann. The first store in Porterville was founded by Mrs. Porter and her husband, Nathan Cook. In 1875, the town's first post office was established. In 1902, the townsite was renamed after General George Custer because he had been killed in action at Little Bighorn during the American Civil War. By 1907, however, all of Porterville had been abandoned due to poverty and lack of industry. In 1912, a group of local businessmen pooled their money and bought land for a new industrial park in Porterville. This led to the development of what is now known as Southern California Edison Company's Kern County Power Plant which produced electricity from 1911 until 1973 when it was sold to Pacific Gas & Electric Co.. The last resident to live in Porterville died in 1967. Today only a few foundations remain from early days such as Mrs Cooks Store which still stands next to First Baptist Church across Main Street from today's high school stadium; or Old Post Office which still sits on Union Avenue across from Donnybrook Golf Course

The first white person to live in Porterville was Captain George Fenton who built a cabin on the banks of the river in 1868. After coming to America from England, Fenton encountered many difficulties while trying to establish himself as a new settler in what would become Kern County. He finally arrived safe and sound at what is now Porterville after spending several weeks travelling through Mexico City and then downriver until he reached what is now Bakersfield. Fenton's cabin stand today atop a hill near downtown Porterville with an observation deck that allows visitors views of both riverbanks and the surrounding countryside In 1903, when it became clear that Bakersfield would be becoming an important agricultural center due to its location on both sides of the Kern River Valley, Mayor Clements decided that incorporation into a municipality would be beneficial for all involved including farmers, merchants and citizens alike. This decision led to what has been known as "the Town Act" which granted local control over most aspects of municipal life such as elections, fire protection and other public services within the boundaries set by city officials growth continued unabated until World War II when wartime rationing forced businesses to close their doors and residents had little choice but to leave their homes Porterville experienced another period of growth during World War II as military personnel were stationed here throughout North America Post-war economic prosperity brought new families into town limits while maintaining infrastructure such as parks, schools and transportation systems which have helped keep Portervilians connected over time Today's community features more than just residents; it also includes numerous businesses providing critical sustenance for local economy
