The George Preston Porter House is located in downtown Porterville and has been preserved as a museum since it was built in 1909. It is one of only two buildings remaining from when this rural community enjoyed some prosperity during its early years. Porterville is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 15,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and sits on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. Porterville was founded in 1849 by Colonel George A. Hinkle and others as an agricultural community on land acquired from Mexico. In 1851, Porterville became a small town with a population of about 100 people when it was platted as part of what would become Kern County. In 1866, Porterville became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 people when it annexed neighboring unincorporated communities such as Stockton and Visalia. The first post office was opened in Porterville on December 12th, 1865 by Jno Wiedemanns (then President) under the name "Portervil". The town's first store was built on Main Street and served local farmers until 1870 when a new store building was erected on West First Street which served as the town hall until 1903 when it burned down. By 1910, Porterville had reached its current size with 10 stores and over 2 dozen businesses including several banks and restaurant chains including Olive Garden/Linguini's Italian eatery which still operates today The discovery of oil deposits in Kern County during World War II led to heavy production growth for both domestic use (mostly for refining crude oil) and export beginning in 1945;[1] however due to high costs associated with infrastructure development,[2][3] manufacturing jobs left behind – especially near major cities – throughout most of the postwar period.[4][5][6] This trend reversed following passage of Proposition 14 (1976), which resulted in deregulation of oil prices that created opportunities for more traditional industrial production within close proximity to consumers rather than being exported offshore or transported long distances.[7][8] By 2000-2001 around 20%[9] or all[10] lost employment within 5 miles (8 km) radius outside major metropolitan areas due to increased competition from foreign companies operating within state boundaries without any corresponding imposition upon area joblessness rates; this included many small towns along I-5 corridor eastward into California’s Central Valley region since these have been hardest hit by shifting regional workforce away from integrated farm/manufacturing industries towards service sector activities resulting in growing poverty rates while maintaining some level off median household incomes
