Porterville is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 29,338 at the 2010 census. Porterville was founded in 1879 by J.D. Porter and his brother-in-law Wm. Hodge as a small cattle station on the Sacramento River. It became an agricultural center with cotton production and began to be known as "The Cotton City". In 1912, the city annexed nearby Bakersfield and grew rapidly due to its location near major highways and its access to water resources for irrigation. Growth slowed during World War II because of military production surrounding the region; however, it resumed growth after the war when industry declined overall and new housing developments appeared around Porterville's central square. In 2000, Porterville approved plans for a massive $353 million dollar development called Gateway that would consist of 9 mixed-use towers containing 554 units and 45 retail spaces across 24 floors above ground level on 6 acres (2 hectares). The project was controversial because it would impact nearly 2/3 of the city's Historic District which is home to more than 100 years of local history including downtown streetscape dating back to 1879, many of which are still in use today In 2006, developer Ivo Cooley proposed building a $1 billion stadium adjacent to Gateway that would have seated over 80,000 people and accommodate events such as soccer matches and Formula One racing. However, this proposal also met resistance from residents who worried about traffic congestion around Gateway Stadium or about potential impacts on cultural heritage within the district

Fremont founded Southeastern California's first school district here; it included Porterville, Groveland(now part of Sacramento), Atascadero(now part of Stockton), Merced(now part of Modesto), and Lawndale(now part of Fresno). The first post office was established here on March 15, 1853; it continued operating until December 12, 1860 when it was discontinued due to lack of residents. When Judge James Lickam built Lickam Station near present-day Porterville in 1863 during his successful campaign against wagon traffic along Route 66 he thought that by doing so he would speed up travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco thereby increasing business opportunities for local farmers and ranchers who were using wagons to commute instead of trains or cars. He may also have been motivated by concerns about reports that Chinese workers living near Southern Pacific Railroad tracks were engaging in prostitution which could lead to social ruin for local citizens if discovered by federal officials looking foracción fraudulenta (i.e., cheating) on their taxes or other government contracts It wasn't long before other entrepreneurs followed suit with similar plans: By 1865 there were three stores/libraries/ churches/ hotels/ schools open within one mile (1 km)of each other in downtown Porterville – all making use of what would soon be known as "the Promenade". Today this area known simply as "Promenade" still contains many businesses that started out here like Noodle House BBQ & Pizza which opened in 2003 right next door to Paddle Wheel Brewery - now closed but once had an amazing view from their patio!
