This annexation created an addition population totaling over 10,000 people A post office opened at Porterville on December 1, 1912 In 1940, following World War II's devastation across mostof California due to Typhoon Haiyanand its consequent damage suffered by local businesses and homes%, various elected officials allocated $10 million towards reconstruction efforts throughout Southern California This assistance allowed numerous new businesses to open up within minutes after being approved by state authorities After more than 50 years Portersvilie enjoyed mostly restful nights despite some periodic nightmarish headlines such as: "Portervillians Vow To Stay And Recover" which appeared frequently during those early days Many have since passed away but few have forgotten all about these pioneering days especially given how fast paced life has become These days there are periodic reunions hosted each year at old locations such as Old High School where stories are shared about old times Local paper still exists
