Porterville is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and adjacent to Bakersfield. The community began as an agricultural community near the confluence of the Porter and San Joaquin Rivers. The first post office was established in 1876. By 1907, Porterville had become a self-sufficient town with its own school system and store. A cotton gin was built in 1907 and became commercially important for Porterville until it closed in 1951. The town's largest employer from 1907 until 1951 was Jardine Rubber Company, which manufactured tires for automobiles. In 1959, both schools were merged into one district and re-opened as co-educational institutions; however, they continue to operate separately today under their own name (Porter Valley School District). During World War II, Porterville served as a military airbase providing storage and airfields for Allied bombers flying over Bakersfield. In 1948, General Electric purchased land adjacent to the local airport and erected a factory producing electric vehicles – known then as GE Auto Parts – which remain operational to this daythase company still employs more than 400 people (GE Auto Parts has been sold several times but primary business remains selling parts online). Other major employers during this time include Miller Brewing Company (founded by Fred Miller)and Southern Pacific Railroad . After years of decline due largely to technological advancements such as refrigeration and film production moving away from Porterville towards larger towns such as Stockton or Modesto,[1] the industry regained some prominence after Toyota announced plans to build a new plant in nearby San Joaquin Valley.[2][3] Although efforts have been made by both local officials[4][5]andToyota themselves[6][7], no factory has yet materialized; instead most of the state-owned corporations have moved out of Porterville since 2000 when production within Kern County dropped off following large budget deficits caused by changes in legislation affecting employment within government workplaces including outsourcing of many jobs related to health care which then went directly into competitors' hands rather than being shared equitably between employees/purchasers/contractors who would benefit from innovation & productivity gains generated through investment - see also poverty & joblessness Today [2010], much like it has always been—a vibrant agricultural community that depends on its water resources for irrigation—Porterville is home to about 1,000 residents who are engaged primarily in farming activities including cattle ranching; fruit orchards; haymaking; grazing livestock; making cheese or other dairy products; doing manufacturing work such as carpentry or welding; or working in service occupations such as retail sales clerks or cooks

Porterville is located on the southern edge of the Kern River Valley and is bordered by Elfin Lakes to the north, Oakhurst to the east, Saugus to the south, and Bakersfield to the west. The first human settlements in what is now Porterville were made around 1851 when George Hargrave and his family set up a cabin on Saddleback Creek. A post office was established at Porterville in 1853; it was discontinued in 1861. The first store opened in Porterville in 1865; it was later closed and moved to Auburn. In 1907, J.C. Penney opened a store at Main Street and Hwy 99W near today's School District boundaries. By 1912, there were six stores operating within one mile of each other at Main Street and Hwy 99W; by 1924 there were 21 stores with a population of 1,000+. In 1917-1918 two groups of men went door-to-door selling war bonds as part of Red Cross fundraising efforts during World War I; these men are generally considered to be pioneers of community service work in Southern California. After World War II ended (1948), many businesses closed due to lack of business competition or shifts in technology; however, five grocery stores operated until 1984 when they all merged into Albertsons supermarket chain (). The first school district in Porterville was organized on April 14th 1907 with Mrs Lillian Nolder as its first superintendent (). In 1960-1961 three new elementary schools were built: Easton Elementary School (), Westona Elementary School (), and Pleasant Grove Elementary School (). On July 22nd 1961 both Easton Elementary Schools became Intermediate Schools while Westona ElementarySchool became Middle School (). On November 3rd 1961 all four elementary schools reopened with additions for which names have still not been announced: Northvale High School (), Morenci High School (), South Creek Middle/High School () Weingarten Middle/High school also opened that year but did not serve students until after classes had started there on January 7th 1962 when their building finally reached capacity! Those who attended Weingarten would go on to attend Lakeland Jr./Sr High school which opening same year served students from Northvale through South Creek middle/high schools which only served students from those districts until 2003 when they merged into Jackson Jr./Sr HS also serving students from Northvale through South Creek middle/highs
