The largest employer in Port Hueneme is Orange County's Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In addition to its military and law enforcement residents, Port Hueneme also has a large population of retirees from nearby cities such as Long Beach and Anaheim. After Prohibition ended in 1933, business returned with new interest as people started traveling backpacking across America and looking for vintage items found along the Mexican border. Ports such as Santa Barbara (from where they shipped wine) and Carlsbad became popular tourist destinations during this time period due to their easy access to both waterfalls and national parks (and also because of their close proximity to Los Angeles). During World War II cargo shipments stopped coming through but when that ceased too Port Hueneme resumed its shipping activity which continued until 1966 when all commercial vessels left for good citing dwindling resources due to development around them including urban sprawl within miles of shoreline . Today's Port Hueneme rests on an agricultural sector which includes dairy farms supplying local restaurants with milk products; fruit orchardists producing oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits; cotton farmers planting soybeans; salt pans are used for processing various crops such as grapeseed oil; seafood packing plants produce catfish and lobster ; while some manufacturing operations remain such as those involved with truck parts production employing many locals plus overseas workers who have brought jobs home since these industries went global during the late 1990s/2000s recession
