Port Hueneme is a city located in Ventura County, California, on the southern coast of Ventura Island. It is known for its wine industry and as the home of The University of Port Hueneme. The city was founded in 1887 by Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Washington Clements. In 1915, the United States Navy established an airfield here to provide defense against Japanese submarines during World War I. The area now occupied by the city was part of Yorba Linda Ranch until it was annexed by Port Hueneme in 1923. Other popular attractions include hiking trails that lead to Big Sur National Park or taking a visit to nearby Hollywood Studios - all within walking distance of town center. One highlight during each year's holiday season is the annual Christmas parade which takes place down Main Street when Christmas falls in December.
