In 1903, George Leland Wickersham set up his business at what is now known as Wickersham & Sons Marine Insurance Agency on Malibu Boulevard near Point Conception State Beach. This business became world-famous for selling life insurance policies which at that time were considered very reliable investments given the unstable stock market conditions at the time.
The region of Port Hueneme was once a major shipping and trade center on the Central Coast. The city of Hueneme was founded in 1853 by Spanish settlers, and it grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Penitente River. The city became an important commercial center for the area and developed into a major port. In 1906,Hueneme merged with neighboring towns to form the new city of Camarillo.
