This connection has led to some interesting history associated with this town including: The first jail in California opened here on November 21st, 1852 after being built as part of a campaign against organized crime within San Francisco. It was located at 4th and Mission Streets before being moved to its current location at 5th and Mission Streets in 1906 following World War I efforts to clean up downtown San Francisco (see also: Jail Museum). The port played an important role during both World Wars with sailors from all over coming here for temporary work or passage on merchant ships. One such sailor is reported to have said about Port Hueneme: "It's not Havana; it's not Puerto Rico - but it's close enough." In 1949, Target Shooting Day was established as a national holiday in honor of Master Gunner George Loyd who had helped win World War II at Leyte Gulf using his skills as a gunner aboard USS Lexington(CV-2). On October 3rd each year since then, Master Gunners from across the country gather together at various locations throughout California along with their families for photo ops and fun firearms games!
