In the early 1960s, Port Hueneme was a sleepy town in Ventura County, California. It was known for its watermelons and its annual Apple Festival. But starting in the fall of 1963, something new started happening in this small town: people were becoming shooters. The first shooters were men who would go out into thecommunity to shoot ducks or other game. But soon enough, there were also women shooters. And then there were children who would become shooters as well- even if they couldn't actually shoot anything! Shooters from all over came to Port Hueneme to participate in this new activity. Some of them had come from cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco; others had been born and raised in rural areas nearSacramento or Portland. But whatever their background, everyone at PortHueneme wanted to be a shooter! Eventually, the port became home to one of the most famous shooting ranges in California: The El Dorado Hills Shooting Range (now part of Red Oak Rifle & Pistol Club). This range was where some of America's best Shooter's would compete against each other- many going on to become famous Name Of The Game players such as Ted Nugent and Darrell Hammond.

In 1886 Captain John Sutter founded the town of Port Hueneme on what are now the eastern limits of Rancho Cuyamaca with Stephan Bollman as its first settler In 1911 Captain Edwin A Mathers established Port Hueneme as a port for the shipment of goods coming down the Pacific Coast from Stockton and other points in California By 1925 there were over 100 businesses in town employing over 1,000 people The US Naval Ammunition Station at Fort Pogue (later known as NAS Point Mugu) began operations during World War II and used local shipbuilding facilities In 1967 when Los Angeles County opened its new county seat at Westwood Village Port Huenema became part of LA County Today much like when it first came into being, Portshuene offers an inviting mix for residents and tourists alike with everything from shopping malls to beaches to restaurants
