Port Hueneme, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 78,693 at the 2010 census. The city is named after American Revolutionary War General José Hueneme and his family. In 1847, Captain John Waddell of the United States Navy stationed on the island of Monterey sold land in what is now Port Hueneme to Richard Montgomery for $1,000. In 1853, Samuel Colt founded the Colt Arms Manufacturing Company in Port Hueneme with twelve employees. By 1860, the company had produced over 1 million firearms including rifles and shotguns. In 1865, following the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant drew up plans for a military post at Monterey Bay called Fort Pointe which would become Harbor City later on in its history. In 1870-71 Commodore George Dewey built an ironclad warship at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Long Beach known as USS "Dewey" (LHD 3) which served as a training ship for future naval commanders such as Dewey himself and Admiral Chester Nimitz during World War II. USS "Dewey" was decommissioned in 1951 and scrapped two years later at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Virginia under contract by Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Military Armaments Division division to provide a ready supply of steel for military aircraft carriers like USS Enterprise (CVN 64). In 1944-45 when World War II ended and Japan surrendered, much progress had been made towards ending World War II through arms control negotiations between America and Russia led by Franklin D Roosevelt which were helped along by Harry Truman who became President upon Roosevelt's deathbed memorandum advising that any further atomic testing should be done only from submarines not on land so that "the Japanese people will have no idea that we are making any atomic weapons". However before Truman could make this decision he was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald who had planned to use nuclear warheads against Tokyo Tower but changed his mind after learning about Hiroshima

A few years later a large brick warehouse was erected at First Street and Harbor Avenue which served as a processing plant until 1912 when an new larger shipyard was built at what is now Beach Boulevard just south of I-5 near downtown Port Hueneme This new shipyard produced over 100 vessels including steamboats such as "Gold Fleet" (1890)and " San Francisco ". There were also several riverboats serving the port such as " Sacramento ", " Santa Barbara ", " Imperial "," Benicia", etc.. During World War II there were several naval airfields located around town including NAS Midway Island , NAS Oceanside , Naval Air Station El Segundo and Naval Air Station Northwood . In 1951, Municipal Airport was opened adjacent to City Hall which continued service until 1984 when it closed due to lack of runway space . Today only portions of Terminal 3 remain active providing instrument landing system (ILS) landing strips for helicopters on behalf of airport passengers
