The base will house up to 9,000 Marines and their families during this time of year as part of the Marine Corps' enforcement of global security. The base was announced in a news conference on December 4th by Mayor James A. Jones and Base Commander Colonel Rick Westfall. The announcement followed an extensive search for a suitable location for the camp which included interviews with area mayors and business leaders. The port town of Hueneme has long been a popular stop on California's Central Coast due to its relaxed lifestyle, mild climate, and easy access to Interstate 805.Hueneme had hoped that the Marine Corps would find a temporary home within their existing installation at Camp Pendleton but that didn't seem likely given its size or location in close proximity to major city centers like Los Angeles and San Diego. However, after much hard work by local officials and Marines who helped lead the search, it was announced on December 4th that Marines from Camp Pendleton will be moving into new barracks located just outside of town under the jurisdiction of Hueneme's mayor and police chief. This addition will makeHueneme one more community along the Central Coast with permanent military facilities nearby- something that residents have been eagerly awaiting since last fall when Defense Department announcements began to trickle in about plans for a possible Marine Corps Basecamp in town proper . Since then, residents have organized themselves into committees responsible for carrying out various tasks related to Fort Irwin's proposed relocation next door (the original site chosen for Camp Pendleton). One such committee is currently meeting to discuss potential transportation solutions between Huen MeiereandCamp Pendleton while another is working on identifying any necessary permits or permitting processes needed before construction can begin .
