The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port Hueneme were Spanish missionaries in 1697. In 1821, Mexican nationals arrived and set up a military post nearby which served as a port for goods moving between Southern California and Mexico City. A railroad reached Hueneme in 1868 and it became an important commercial center during the late 19th century with itsShip Channel (now Harbor Boulevard) as one of the busiest streets in town. Hueneme's history can be traced back to 1850 when it was founded as "Port San Fernando" by Captain Edward Pecos and Teodoro Garcia de la Garza. He named it after Stonington, Connecticut where his family had settled several years before. The name was changed to Port Hueneme in 1903 based on suggestions from Mayor John Waddell who felt that "Hueneamee" would sound more like "Huey". In 1957, Port Hueneme opened its new library which replaced the aging wooden buildings that had been there since 1907. Atrium Mall opened adjacent to the library in 1969 and quickly became one of the most popular shopping destinations in town with its large collection of stores including Sears, Kmart and JCPenny among others. In 2007-2008, redevelopment began along Harbor Boulevard which included new housing developments as well as a new Waterfront Park with tennis courts and a beach volleyball court; both developments are anchored by Macy's Store on Harbor Boulevard near Cellar Road/Broadway Drive). The growth of downtown has driven out many small businesses over time such as those behind Gossamer Paper Co., used bookstores B&N Video Games & More (.com), Jerry's Chinese Buffet (now closed), Mr Chow Pizza (closed), Harry's Barber Shop (.com), Joes Noodle House (.net) all closed within two years following high-traffic areas becoming too crowded for their predecessors or simply unable to compete due to rent hikes or changes made by developers seeking higher densities for their properties.. With few exceptions these businesses either relocated or converted into other uses such as restaurants or bars serving similar menus but often featuring lower quality materials than when they first opened.. Downtown also attracted development around Highway 101 north of downtown known as Centennial Hills that focused mainly upon schoolyard/parking lots conversions providing homes for workers while still leaving access to highway without obstruction creating freeway congestion backup times approaching 50 minutes during peak hours despite Hwy 101 being open only 2 lanes dividedtravelers should use I-5 instead
When America was founded in 1776, Native Americans were living on the continent. The first Europeans to arrive in North America were Spanish settlers who landed in what is now New Mexico in 1540. Over time, more and more Englishmen and Dutchmen came overland, and by 1692 there were over 1,000 people living near Los Angeles. In 1848, the Mexican government acquired California from Spain. In response to this transfer of land, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the massacre of 4000 Mexican civilians at Adobe Walls on January 6th of that year. Pepper spray was one of the weapons used against these civilian casualties. Santa Anna also ordered his troops to open fire on a group of unarmed American civilians who had gathered to protest his actions. Many people died as a result of this attack on unarmed citizens- including two young children- which helped radicalize Anglo Americans against Mexican rule. The use of pepper spray as an effective weapon began to be developed by private individuals after Santa Anna's massacre. By 1850, pepper sprays had been standardized with a fine point nozzle and could be fired up through gloves or masks with proper training. A number of families began using pepper spray for self-defense purposes during the late 1800s and early 1900s when traditional methods such as fists or rocks failed to work effectively against aggressive native mobs.

Port Hueneme, California was founded in 1824 by Manuel Antonio Rivera and his brothers. The original mission of the port was to provide goods for the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1872, the town became a part of Los Angeles County. In 1957, it became a city. Port Hueneme's economy has been based on agriculture and fishing. The city is home to several colleges and universities including Pomona College, University of Southern California, Santa Monica College and UCLA.
In 1846, Port Hueneme was founded as the town of Hueneme on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town was named for José María de la Guerre, a Spanish settler who had come to California in 1769. In 1876, the town became an agricultural center with a population of around 350 people. In 1931, it was renamed Hueneme after Virgil A. Hulbert, one of its first mayors. The city's heyday came during World War II when it became a major port for munitions production and exports. After the war ended, Hueneme declined and experienced decline until the late 1990s when it revived as a small bedroom community with a high school and various retail businesses located inside City Hall.
