By 1907, it had reached its peak with a population of about 15,000 people. However, the town's prosperity came to an end during World War II when bothPort Hueneme and Ventura were bombed by Japanese forces. After the war, Port Hueneme slowly declined until it ceased to exist as a municipality in 1960. Port Hueneme is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 21,854 at the 2010 census. It is the commercial and industrial center of Southern California's Inland Empire region. The city of Port Hueneme was founded on November 2, 1906 by businessmen George W. Smith and Arthur Sayers as an agricultural town on the Pacific Coast Highway (now Interstate 805). The name derived from a Spanish phrase meaning "place where water makes mud." On December 3, 1916, Port Hueneme became part of the new City of San Diego. On February 14, 1922 it incorporated as a village under the name of Villa port-huenemeno. On May 10, 1984 it changed its name to Port Hueneme because of concerns about possible confusion with another nearby city,Hermosa Beach. In 1990-1991, an $8 million project was undertaken to update and improve all aspects of downtown which included adding sidewalks and streetscape improvements as well as improving public transportation options such as expanding bus service from the existing Terminal 1 into downtown and creating new parking garage spaces for businesses near Terminal 1 along Airport Boulevard. It also allowed for renovation/replacement/updating of many historic buildings in downtown including: First National Bank Building (1911), American Legion Post 9 (1915), The Methodist Episcopal Church (1896), San Diego branch bank WM Fenton & Sons (1898), Pinchot House (1895) and more... resulting in increased commerce throughout Downtown - becoming one of America’s most vibrant business districts during this time period! Today's skyline features just over 100 structures that have been built or renovated in Downtown since 1990;thousands more are planned or under construction! This growth has resulted in significant traffic congestion on Harbor Boulevard between Third Street and Main Street due to both continuous development within walking distance but also heavy truck traffic coming into Downtown from all directions! In order to alleviate these issues a comprehensive redevelopment plan will be launched soon that should solve many long standing problems including expanded bike lanes through Downtown;a new waterfront park adjacent to Terminal 1 which will serve not only as a great public space for people watching but also provide open space for cultural events;and improved access via shuttle buses directly from DTLA Airport - making it easier for people who work or live near Downtown to get around without having to go out onto Harbor Boulevard

The first Europeans to arrive in San Diego County were the Morroccans in 1542. They founded Mission San Diego de Alcántara, which was dedicated to converting the California natives to Christianity. The mission was abandoned in 1769 and later converted into an artillery battery. In 1821, Mexico acquired California through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and Alvarado became governor of what is now Baja California. On February 14, 1846, Mexican General Martínez led a force against American forces at the Battle of Adobe Walls. The Americans emerged victorious and Alvarado was captured and executed. After his death, Californios began petitioning for their own statehood as well as independence from Mexico. In 1850, Californios ratified the United States Constitution and became self-governing citizens of America.
