Today these buildings still stand next door to each other though most have been replaced by housing units! A highlight of the city’s history came when it hostedthe United States Olympic Committee’s trials for Track & Field athletes starting on April 6th 1956! After Cola left office following mayoral term 1970-1972 everyone tried their best but no one really succeeded in taking over his legacy like Arturo did!!!!! In 1978 Arturo Cola Jr took office after his father passed away unexpectedly so he took up his fathers seat!!! During his terms (1978-1981) taxes increased significantly due mainly because he increased spending on infrastructure projects!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although not without controversy some OfArturoColas accomplishments such as creating Plaza de la Cultura (Port Huencia Cultural Park) are acknowledged statewide!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally after four years (1981-1983) Jim Beyer assumed office becoming America’s first Latino Mayor thanks largely To His initiatives like increasing funding for public education etc….. After three years (1983–1985) Jerry Brown took office becoming America’s first openly gayMayor !! Despite much progress made during Brown’s term Ports population started slipping again however later ID added another lyceum making it back onto government property enhancing its overall stature
