Heading northeast along the Coast Ranges he anchored off Cabrillo Point near present-day Hwy 101 near milepost 7½ today's Harbor Beach Park while his ship Surveying Squadron Anchored east of Point Reyes National Seashore surveyed land claimed by Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla as part of Alta California under Mexican Rule including present-day Port Hueneme where he had land grants from Colomar Rey on October 12, 1800 which included an adobe hacienda (now part of NAPA State University) known as El Castillo or La Casa Blanca. Captain Cook's Land grant extended 3 miles north to Laguna Blanca Creek then 2 miles east to El Camino Real then forward to what is now downtown Port Hueneme where his grant ended at Mission Viejo beach next to Isla Santa Rosa about midway between Point Reyes National Seashore and Laguna Blanca Creek shoreline today's Harbor Beach Park across from NAPA State University across from Interstate 5 opened in 1915 serving as a port for Southern California until 1968 when its closure due to lack of commercial traffic led to its demolition in 1969 followed by re- erection in 1974 with expanded container landing area adjacent Bay View Landing Wharf which became homeport for both CAISO Ports Sequim - Imperial Beach - Long Beach - Seal Beach - Huntington Beach -- also Freeport - Yuma - Mexicali

In the early 20th century, Port Hueneme became known as one of the most prosperous ports on the West Coast of America because of its location at the mouth of San Diego Bay and its access to oil resources. During World War II, Port Hueneme played an important role as a military base for munitions production. In recent years, port redevelopment has led to increased activity within the town boundaries; however, it remains an unincorporated community with limited economic development potential outside of town limits.

In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American forces raided and burned a ranch near present-day Hueneme. Hueneme's start as a small community came about because local landowners could not find someone to build them a wharf on the northern coast of Ventura County. A resident of nearby Simi Valley donated land for a wharf that would provide access to the Pacific Ocean for shipping goods from southern California. As more people moved into and around Hueneme over time, fishing became one of its most important economic pursuits and shoreline development slowed down or stopped altogether due to lack of space or competition from other towns in the area.
