Port Hueneme, California is a city in southern Orange County, California. The population was 31,815 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Ocean and bordered by Newport Beach to the east and Laguna Niguel to the west. The first Europeans to visit Port Hueneme were Spanish sailors who sailed past it on their way from Mexico City in 1542. In 1795-97 Commodore John Hawkins sailed his squadron of ships up the coast of Southern California looking for an entrance to Asia through what is now known as Panama. He sighted a large body of water off shore which he thought might be the mouth of an enterprising Francisco de Anza Expedition's route from Acapulco to San Francisco via Los Angeles Bay. It was only after his shipwreck on Santa Catalina Island that he realized this could not be America's most northerly point; he named it San Juan Bautista (today Point Loma) after St Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy where Hawkins had been stranded before his voyage became famous as part of Anzio Operation during World War II! In 1821, when Mexico won its independence from Spain, Port Hueneme became part of Mexican territory under Mexican governor Don Manuel Gomez y Costilla until 1850 when it reverted back to United States jurisdiction following Mexican–American War hostilities between United States forces and Mexican armies commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna over issues such as land grants and boundary changes made during Reconstruction Period conditions following Ulysses S Grant's 1868 presidential victory over Andrew Johnson. On September 11/12 1897 USS "Omaha"fired upon two boats filled with Confederate sympathizers off shore near Point Conception while patrolling around Cape Mendocino Harbor according to one account; no injuries resulted although nine USCG crewmen were taken prisoner including officer First Class James Fenton who later died at sea from wounds received aboard "Omaha". A year later USS "Pilgrim" came within range of another boat containing secessionist sympathizers off shore about five miles south of Point Conception but missed due to poor weather conditions; no casualties resulted although Acting Lieutenant W C Bowen was captured along with three other USCG officers aboard "Pilgrim". On December 12 1907 US Navy destroyer USS Dahlgren fired upon ferries transporting supplies between Newport Beach and Sausalito loaded with troops training for war against Spain in support Operation White Cloud which escalated into a full blown war August 16-October 25 1907 when Major General José María Morelos surrendered Chihuahua state capital Mexico City without offering its citizens an opportunity for refuge or surrendering arms instead deeming them rebels rather than civilians fleeing INTO THE UNITED STATES IN contravention OF MEXICO'S AND AMERICAN LAW! The resulting Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended all outstanding military conflicts between American and Mexican forces within days...the last time Americans fired upon a civilian vessel was December 12 1907 when USS Dahlgren shot down two vessels carrying supplies between Newport Beach and Sausalito!" This event provides one possible explanation for why there have been sporadic reports throughout recent years about unidentified objects sighting across central California coastline attributed either specifically or generallyto UFOs activity... even though sightings have occurred sporadically along this coast since antiquity! The area that is now Port Hueneme was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 1700s. The area was named for a small creek that flowed through the community. By 1821, the town had been organized and was known as "Hueneme". In 1846, Don Miguel de Anza Expedition passed through this area and named it after his father-in-law, Juan Bautista de Anza.
