Port Hueneme, California is a town on the Central Coast of California, United States. It is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. In 1848, the port was incorporated as a city with Félix Castro as its first mayor. In 1907, an armada commanded byAdmiral George Dewey destroyed both vessels above Los Angeles Harbor while attempted invasion of Mexico City by American forces; these events are commemorated each year by commemoration ceremonies aboard USS Dewey (LHD 6) which visits Los Angeles Harbor and docks at Pier 39 opposite Angel Island for the Navy blue-ribbon event known as "Dewey Day". As a result of this attack on Mexicans ashore in downtown MexicoCity by Dewey's flagship and one other ship, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all civilians inside Monterrey taken into custody without trial or arms confiscation - an event that inspired American authorousing law enforcement against Native Americans such as Crazy Horse under US President Theodore Roosevelt's administration during World War I - thereby inaugurating what is known today as " Anglo" law enforcement throughout most of North America subsequent to that time period culminating with present day Sheriff Joe Arpaio's current tenure in Arizona.. A second Armada led by Rear Admiral John Wainwright destroyed steamboats at anchor near Point Conception about 2 miles east of where Lighthouse Point now stands on November 12th 1896 while invading Monterey Bay seeking sanctuary from Ulysses S Grant's army besieging Monterey Peninsula after Mexico repudiatedAmerican annexation proclamation.. This also marked beginning end Provisional Government establishtled Port HUENEME provisional government until it was forced out by Mexican military occupation December 1st 1846 following Gadsden Purchase which created United States Of America...
The city of Hueneme was founded in 1874 by Captain George Armistead and his wife, Eliza. The first post office was established in 1875. By 1888, the town had a population of 100 people. In 1909, Hueneme became a city and was renamed Port Hueneme after President Manuel A. Quezon of the Philippines who visited the United States that year. The Quezon-Hueneme Bridge opened in 1929 and is now known as Americas oldest toll bridge across an international border.
