The area that would become Port Hueneme was first settled by Native Americans who called it Pico de la Hacha (meaning "little peak"). The name may be from the Coast Miwok word poh-toh-haa which means "head of waves" or "point of land with high water", referring to its location on an important navigation route between San Pedro Bay and Ventura Harbor. A post office called Hueneme was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1959. The town was named for Hiram Mifflin Harriman, chairman of Sears Roebuck & Co., who donated land for the town. At first all of the goods shipped to and from southern Mexico came through Mexicali before reaching Acapulco; however, as this trade declined during World War I, Ports of Call Act passed in 1916 allowed American shipping companies to build docks at Santa Paula on Yorba Linda River so that goods could be unloaded there instead. In 1927 a section of town east of Main Street became known as Hollywood because Hollywood studios were then located nearby on Vine Street. The port activity declined during World War II but resumed following the war when larger vessels began using Ventura Boulevard as their transhipment point from Long Beach to various points around America. By 1965 Port Hueneme had outgrown its facilities at Santa Paula and built a new pier north of downtown on Yacht Haven Boulevard which became known as The Port Inn/Hueneme Marina. Today it continues to serve both commercial and passenger ships docking here for reloading and unloading cargo including ferries going upriver from LAX airport which provide service between downtown Los Angeles and Point Loma along with several shuttles connecting Downtown LA with other parts of Southern California

Today, downtown Port Hueneme continues to be an important cultural center for both locals and visitors alike thanks to its rich history and unique architecture. The first Europeans to visit Port Hueneme were the Spaniards in 1769. The area was given to the United States by Mexico in 1821. In 1857, the town of Port Hueneme was founded on the site of an earlier post office. The town grew rapidly and by 1916 it had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1941, Port Hueneme became part of Los Angeles County. In 1970, it became a city under the name ofHueneme.
