In 1848, United States troops invaded Mexico and sacked Juarez, which led to American annexation of California. By 1860,Port Hueneme had become an important seaport on the Pacific Coast and its population had increased to 2,500 people. By 1870, Port Hueneme had become a thriving commercial center with several large businesses including C & J Fritsch Brewery, A&P Grocery Store, and Lumberyard Shop. The port continued to grow through the late 19th century until it reached its peak during World War II when it handled over one million tons of cargo. After the war ended in 1945, most of the port's infrastructure was destroyed by fire and redevelopment began in earnest. Today, Port Hueneme is home to a number of smaller businesses as well as two small naval shipsyards which provide employment for local residents.

Port Hueneme, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 33,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ventura County were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his brother-in-law Mission Santa Paula de Acapulco (now part of Los Angeles). On September 15, 1835, Manuel Garza granted a Rancho San Rafael parcel including present day Port Hueneme to José Joaquín Murillo for $4 per acre. The grant came about because Mission Santa Paula de Acapulco was selling parcels of land near modern day Ventura and Santa Barbara counties for $1 per acre. In 1849 the United States acquired holdings in Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. On February 14th of that year General Stephen Watts Kearny named Port Hueneme "the New Town" onshore at Point Conception after he surveyed and platted it as part of his plan to build an overland route from Yuma City in Arizona to Sacramento via Mono Lake and Mexicali Bay. A Post Office called "Port Hueneme" was opened on December 24th of that year by Captain John Sutter with six mail cartloads containing mail from TucsonArizona On July 12th 1863 Officers Mate Josiah Bartlett and Second Mate Ebenezer Morse landed their boat "Hornet" off shore from Point Conception during their failed attempt to explore Prince Caspian Sea northwest coast of Southern California It wasn't until 1898 when railroad developer Frederick Law Olmsted spotted potential oil resources offshore near where current day Harbor Boulevard becomes Soquel Channel that he decided to come ashore and develop this area into a port town based on his earlier observations Olmsted's dredging company Lorenz Oil & Refining Company began production on October 15th 1906 with its first product spilling out onto Harbor Boulevard just south of where it occupies today The original downtown core consisted only of warehouses while much later brick buildings were erected along First Street between Railroad Avenue and Harbor Boulevard During World War II Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was situated here but never used because Japan surrendered without any fighting on September 8 1945 . Today there are few if any reminders remaining as most developed areas have replaced them
