Today, Pomona remains an important community with strong cultural ties – especially among itsrose industry advocates – despite having shrinking populations throughout much of recent decades.
Pomona was founded by the Spanish in 1781 as Rancho San Luis Rey. It was named for Pope Paul V's visit to Mexico in 1768. The town began as a small village on the west bank of the current Pomona River, about half a mile upstream from its present site.
