They named their new observatory Mount Wilson after their father-in-law General John Cushing who had donated all 515 acres (250 hectares) around Mount Wilson which they used for grazing purposes before purchasing it from George Washington Carver. In 1888–89 Pomona became one of three cities annexed by Los Angeles when that city was formed from portions of Orange County and Riverside County. The annexation created a ghost town withinLos Angeles with few people remaining until World War II when many Atlantics moved into Pomona due to its relative proximity to military bases throughout southern California as well as its ample housing developments for servicemen stationed there during World War II and postwar years
