Pomona is a city in southern California. It was founded in 1871 by American banker James Irvine and his wife, Lucy Irvine. Pomona became an incorporated town on April 15, 1886. The city was first named Clarendon after the Duke of Westminster, but it was changed to Pomona in honor of James Irvine's friend and associate, Sir John A. Macdonald (1826-1911). The name change came about because at the time Pomona had no other namesake than Clarendon. Over time, many different businesses developed along State Route 91 near Claremont Boulevard: citrus groves, manufacturing plants (including contributions by GEICO and Ford), an amusement park (which closed in 1984), and new housing developments such as Eagle Rock subdivision which became one of Los Angeles' most popular neighborhoods after World War II. In 1924, Pomona's first public library opened on Elm Street; it remains the only municipally-owned library in California. By 1970, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Pomona employing over 1,000 people; today, most of these establishments are gone but legacy buildings remain such as City Hall and the Claremont Hotel/ casino complex
