The first Europeans to visit what is now Pomona were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770 who named it La Antigua California after their ships finding an ancient Inca settlement there. The town was founded by Captain José Gabriel Marquez y Costilla as Rancho Cucamonga on November 15, 1859, east of Palmdale. It was originally part of Imperial County but became part of San Bernardino County when it was organized on March 4, 1871. The townsite had been platted by James Irvine in 1836 as Rancho Rincon de la Laguna that included present-day Claremont; Sunland Park; and parts of today's Venzuela Canyon and Monrovia neighborhoods. The city proper was incorporated on July 14, 1912 from portions of neighboring Sunland Park (now called Claremont) and Sun City (now known as Villa Park). On January 1st 1913 Pomona annexed parts of Verdugo Hills from Riverside County which made it a municipality with its own government structure separate from that of San Bernardino County which then provided all services for both municipalities including police and fire protection On October 25th 1914 Pomona played host to the world's first professional football game when Santa Clara University defeated Noe Valley 45-0 at Stater Bros Field or "Old Globe" located just outsidepresent day downtown Pomona In 1917 Drury College moved its campus from Chino Hills into what is now north side of Main Street near Doheny Stadium before finally moving back into Chino Hills following World War I In 1923 Southern Pacific Railroad relocated its main line through downtown Los Angeles between Grand Avenue/7th Street/Chinatown Boulevard junction and Town Square station making downtown an important transportation hub for passengers traveling southbound along Grand Avenue towards Long Beach while passengers traveling northbound along Seventh Street towards Pasadena
