Pomona was founded by Spanish colonists in 1781. The area now known as Pomona was part of Rancho San Bernardino, which belonged to José María Cámpora. The first post office in the area was established at what is now called Eastwood Avenue in 1875. The town name originated from a place nearby, Pompa Nera, meaning "big ravine." In 1912, Pomona became an incorporated city.
