Pomona is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 71,828 at the 2010 census. Pomona is known for its scenic beauty and wide variety of cultural attractions including the Pomona Fairgrounds and Pomona Museum of Art. The area that now comprises Pomona was first inhabited by the Mono people. They were moved to what is now Kern County by ranchers in 1853 because of problems with monomania among the settlers. The city was founded on July 16, 1858 by George Hearn and his brother James Purdy as a small town on the south side of San Gabriel River near present-day Claremont. It became an incorporated town on December 12, 1860. The Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1865 and began building tracks through present-day Pomona; this greatly increased commercial activity in the town which led to it becoming one of the most developed areas in Kern County. The railroad helped spur development around Claremont College (now Claremont Graduate University) and new businesses sprang up such as grocery stores, dry goods stores, restaurants and theaters. In 1924, Pomona's first professional football team played their only game against Agoura Hills High School after being formed as a school league team by then-city mayor Harry Jahnke Sr.. In 1937, Don Bolles started construction on what would become Claremont Boulevard which ran through downtown Pomona between Seventh Street and Regent Street; this gave rise to one of Northern California's most well-known addresses given that it still remains today as one of downtown Pomona's primary arteries despite having undergone several name changes over time (most notably Clarendon Boulevard). On October 26, 1957 controversy erupted when students from Clarendon High School organized a sit-in against high tuition rates at nearby UCLA; this led to open warfare between Bruins players and local students which eventually ended with UCLA winning 54–0(the largest margin of victory for any university ever announced during collegiate football). This event has been referred to as "the greatest upset in NCAA history". In 1974 Clarence Coleman opened Coleman Drugstore & Restaurant which quickly became an institution within the community due to its large selection of cigarettes, booze and other assorted items not typically found elsewhere within reach without breaking the bank or spending hours driving away from home. In 1984 City Councilwoman Dianne Ackerman appointed former Mayor Harry Jahnke III as Directorial Officer for Community Affairs; this position soon gave birth to many future redevelopment projects spearheaded by Ackerman such as bringing down Interstate 210 south into downtown Pomona along serpentine Ventura Boulevard until it reached El Camino Real before terminating at Main Street which later became Ashkenazi Jewish Hospital Drive (later renamed Clarenthian Hospital Drive). In 1990 Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers attended classes here while attending John Jay College Preparatory School before transferring to UC Los Angeles where he won two NCAA championships; this event helped drive tourism growth throughout central California following college football's return to prominence nationwide after decades hiatus during World War II . Pomona, California was founded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1769 as a small ranch on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The area now known as Pomona was part of Madera County until 1879, when it became part of Angeles County. The town was platted in 1881 and named for the Pomona grape variety. In 1911, Pomona joined with other cities in Metropolitan Los Angeles to form what is today called the City of Los Angeles.
