After Mexican independence was granted to America on August 14, 1848, American settlers began arriving in large numbers and by 1860 there were over 20 settlements in what is today eastern Riverside County and western Monterey County. The first post office for Pomona was established on December 6, 1860. A few months later a store opened near present-day Spring Valley Road and 21st Street which served as the town's initial business district until1871 when a depot was built at Ninth Street near Willowbrook (now known as Claremont). The depot served as an important transportation link between Orange County and San Bernardino County during this time period. It was here that mail delivery services were started from May 1st until September 30th of each year which helped to increase trade within the growing community. One of early leaders in Pomona was John Sutter who arrived here with his family from Sacramento ca 1847-49 He started out as a Hudsons Bay Company scout before becoming leader of an adobe settlement at Mission San Gabriel Rey de las Palmas (later renamed Rancho Santa Anita) about ten miles east of present day Claremont on February 3rd, 1850 His wife Nancie gave birth to their only child Alta Materna on October 15th 1850 at Rancho Santa Anita while he attended school nearby; their second son Angel may have been born later but details are murky due to lack of historical evidence Dowdy & Son Saloon probably founded circa 1855 This saloon had three stories with an attached basement used for storage Gambling activities continued into 1907 when law enforcement stopped operations Thereafter many speakeasies opened throughout town along Spring Valley Rd

Pomona is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 30,728 at the 2010 census. Pomona is located on the east side of Kern River, immediately south of Bakersfield and east of Stockton. Pomona began as an agricultural community near what is now Interstate 5 and Route 66. It declined during the 20th century as manufacturing boomed in neighboring Bakersfield and Stockton; however, recent development has revived interest in Pomona's history and architecture. Pomona was founded by Mormons who traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois to Butter Valley in 1849 searching for a new home for their people. They named their new community after Mount Pomona in Northern California where they had seen a beautiful view from a peak. The first post office was established at Pomona on January 12, 1850. A store opened there on November 1st of that year followed by a school on December 6th which served grades one through twelve until 1870 when it moved to San Bernardino because of budgetary concerns caused by the Gold Rush frenzy elsewhere in Southern California ! In 1861, Mormon missionaries arrived in southern Kern County looking for converts to establish an LDS church there; however little progress was made until 1865 when Brigham Young called upon his fellow Latter-day Saints to move into what would become Kern County due to drought conditions throughout much of California ! After some initial difficulties with construction Hellgate Canyon Road was completed through Rancho Palmdale on October 15th 1867 making Pomona part of Los Angeles county! A second post office building (now known as the Hometown Mart) reopened at 710 N 3rd Street on February 14th 1870 following extension from downtown Los Angeles! By 1881 most businesses had closed down due to lack of customers or competition from nearby Pasadena and Bakersfield but one small business kept going - Mrs Fenton’s Floral Emporium! Mrs Fenton ran this business until her death in 1925 which left it operational until May 10th 1969 when it burned down exposing many historical artifacts including old photographs dating back to the early 1900’s
