It wasn't until 1886 when prospectors discovered large amounts of gold near where today's Community College Park stands that mining activity began at nearby Lompoc followed by more recent discoveries at Atherton south of town in 1984 culminating with the discovery off Centerline Drive near Chino Hills in 1988! Today much larger quantities continue to be mined at Carlsbad Caverns & South Mountain Mine just north east corner Of town along Interstate 15 between Claremont Boulevard/I-5 exit 113A/Carroll Avenue! In 1865 Captain John Czarnecki completed travelogue Travels Along The Pacific Coast And Its Dependent Lands Now Called California recorded some interesting observations about people who live nearby: “One class among these excellent farmers reside at various points around our watering places; viz., those who water their plants with rainwater collected from roofs or gutters or any convenient place within easy reach; others try to get all possible use outof surface water which falls from sky or clouds; still others build cisterns underground” etc. This description could well have been written about today's residents living close by Community College Park as we collect rainwater Snyder Water Company collection bins throughout campus!
