In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order providing federal land grants west of the Mississippi River to settlers who would build towns on it such as Carson City, Nevada; Placerville, California; Yreka, California; Bishop Arthur Nevue’s Rancho Niguel; Los Angeles County; East Mojave Desert outpost at White Sands Lake; and others. The area now comprising Pomona became part of Los Angeles County on April 14, 1910 when eastern Kern County joined it as well. The agricultural sector has been dominant in Pomona's economy ever since its establishment as a small town with few resources other than man power and muscle - men working their own farms or leasing land from larger landowners until recently when irrigation systems have made large-scale production possible statewide especially within Greater Los Angeles urban areas which have seen an influx of immigrants – many of whom settled in Pomona specifically because they could find good jobs available or because their families had connections hereabouts that led them to stay put even after entry into American society seemed like a better option back home
