On November 7, 1872, about 25 people gathered at the old San Fernando Mission to celebrate the conversion of Isidro Gomez to Christianity and welcome new settlers into the area. The group name for their event was "La Confraternidad Apostólica de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo." The following year, a post office was established at Pomona with mail service beginning on December 1. The community grew slowly until it had a population of 100 residents by 1908. In 1916, the United States entered World War I and many workers were drafted into military service in Southern California; this created an increased demand for housing and businesses began opening up in Pomona. In 1919, Pomona became one of 20 communities served by the newly created city government. The population peaked at 300 residents in 1940 due to World War II and subsequent growth within local industry and services; however, during the postwar years there has been limited growth (less than 1% annually) due to steadily falling crime rates and increasing suburban development around Pomona Valley
