In 1851–1852, George Pacific Railroad extended its line from Madera through Carpinteria to El Monte and then north to Anaheim; this opened up new opportunities for farming and ranching along the route. The town started to form soon afterwards as farmers began moving into what would become the central business district today known as East Pomona Boulevard/Aliso Viejo Boulevard (east of Interstate 15). By 1870 it had a population of 350 residents and was renamed Pomona because of enthusiasm shown by General James Halleck for an agricultural settlement on November 12 that year while promoting a visit to Southern Mexico City by President Ulysses S Grant undersecretary John Acheson.. On December 17th 1870 Jules Michelet arrived at La Paloma Point on horseback after crossing over from Mexico City on foot25 He found that there were no permanent Spanish settlers or cattle ranchers but only transient Mexicans who had recently come across American lines looking for passage back homeA few weeks later Frenchman François-Xavier Lefèvre also reached La Paloma Point25 At about this timeomasa “native” woman named Maria Antonietta Ruiz came ashore from her boat landing oppositeLa Paloma Point26 She claimed descent from Juan Rodríguez de Jesus y Montoya27Lefèvre took her back to Coyote Springs where she gave birth to a son before sailing off again towards Mexicali34 After Lefèvre left we find no record of him or any others visiting la paloma point until AFTER THE American Invasion35 It should be noted that there areNOADDRESSES FOR ANY OF THESE PEOPLE IN ANY OF THE PUBLIC RECORDS OF SAN BENITO COUNTY AT THIS TIME36 This means that they may not have actually been present when Lefèvre arrived so if he did indeed arrive during this period then his presence could not have been confirmed

Pomona was founded by Spanish settlers in 1824 and became part of the United States in 1848. It is located on the east side of San Bernardino Mountains and it is adjacent to Claremont City on the west side of Pomona Hills. The first European settlement in what is now Pomona was made by José Gabriel Marquez on October 5, 1824 when he and his family left Otay Mesa for what would become Pomona. Marquez named his new town after General Don José de Muñoz y Costilla who had surrendered to Mexico at Monterrey that year during their war for independence from Spain. The name "Pomona" means "place where many trees are found." In 1826, John Cravath erected a cabin near what is now Main Street and State Route 116 which served as the town's first post office. In 1830, territorial governor Pio Pico granted land to David Waddell for a rancho near present-day Claremont City limits; this grant led to further development of Rancho Ptujbana within present-day Claremont boundaries. A school district was organized in 1839 with John D'Augell as superintendent with students from Claremont coming down from Mt Diablo School District #2 across Mount Diablo Road each day to attend Mr. D'Augell's Academy (now known as Claremont High School). On November 1, 1840 Census records show that there were 8 residents living in Rancho Ptujbana including 4 Native American men: 2 brothers (John Sr./Joseph) and one father (Hermann) all natives of Mexico or Central America who had come across the borderland while exploring this area prior to Mexican independence from Spain On February 15th 1850 both local option voting & a popular vote resulted in incorporation into Fresno County through process known as “Regulation No 702” but no formal change took place until May 3rd 1860 when voters approved an ordinance changing its name to Pomona Municipal Corporation under which time it continued under control by Fresno County government The early years were difficult due to repeated earthquakes that struck nearby Atascadero Creek causing extensive damage including loss of homes and businesses along with loss of life . However much progress was made over time such as: building schools (1847), churches (1849), water works(1850), railroad crossing built 1865 just north of town center & still used today (1925), making Pomonna one stop on Southern California’s only transcontinental Railroad Pomona Growers Association formed 1888 focused on promoting market gardening practices around county limits First automobile dealership opened up 1925 at 202 S Alma St., later becoming occupied by Chevrolet company before closure in 1985 Today Pomona is primarily an agricultural community home to some high tech companies like Google Fiber
