Pleasanton was founded on October 20, 1853 by John O'Neill and his brother Michael O'Neill. The first store in town was built on State Street by Wm. Halsey and Bros. In 1860, A & E Furriers established a fur-trade business on High Street which lasted until 1865 when it moved to nearby Concordia Place where it continued to operate until 1898 when it burned down. In 1868, George Gillett developed a sugar refinery called Gillett's Refinery which became one of Northern California's most important industries during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1915, Jules Hemingway purchased interest in Gillett's Refinery from Jules LaFontaine; he would later become an owner and operator of several other businesses including citrus groves and real estate interests throughout Northern California before dying in 1944 at age 87 years old. In 1916, after World War I ended with victory for Allied forces over Germany, Pleasanton welcomed returning veterans with open arms as they began their new lives within the community while also welcoming burgeoning waves of Latino immigrants who arrived seeking opportunity and betterment both inside and outside of America following World War II. With its growing population came increased development as well as infrastructure needs that necessitated passage of state legislatureestablishing Measure T (1920)ocating $1 million for local improvements including sidewalks, public works projects such as water supplies and streetlights etc., annexation of unincorporated communities located eastward along Interstate 80 (1925), construction of an expressway through downtown (1927) resulting in incorporation into one City under name "Pleasanton" During this time period there were several key incidents/events that further shaped or impacted Pleasanton residents: On July 1st 1922 two men walked into a local grocery store here wounding three people before being shot dead by police; this event led to statewide outrage leading to tougher gun control laws across the US On November 6th 1935 a groupof radical anarchists entered Spreckels Department Store here cutting off all supply lines to customers before escaping out onto Market Street - this event led to a social media backlash accusing Californians more commonly known as Yakuza members or "the bandits" responsible for numerous high-profile crimes such as hotel bombings throughout Los Angeles County between 1929-1963
