Pleasanton is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 36,994 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Contra Costa County after Stockton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The town was founded by Captain John Gault on May 25, 1848 as an agricultural and cavalry station on Rancho San Lorenzo de las Pulgas, about southeast of downtown San Francisco. A post office called "Pleasanton" was established in 1851, and the name was changed to "Pleasanton" on October 1, 1875. The discovery of oil near Vallejo in 1908 led to a rapid growth of industry in Pleasantlyon and other nearby towns; however, it did not lead to sustained economic development until later decades when new technologies began sprouting up throughout Silicon Valley. In recent years, Pleasureton has become a center for technology startups and high-tech businesses with many employees working at Googleplex (formerly known as Google Earth), Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters, Adobe Systems' Palo Alto campus and Apple Inc.'s Cupertino Campus. Pleasanton is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 37,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south and west, Norco to the northwest and Happy Valley to the southeast. The first people in what is now Pleasanton arrived from nearby Concord in 1849. They were farmers who raised crops and built homes near their farmsteads on Harrison Street today's U.S. Route 101 between Menlo Park Boulevard (now Cypress Avenue) and Vallejo Boulevard (now Hearst Boulevard). In 1856, they organized as a town under the name of Concordia. A post office was established at Pleasanton in 1860, but it did not remain open long because of its close proximity to San Francisco. In 1871, an act was passed by Congress which created Contra Costa County; within its boundaries was land that had been part of Alameda County since 1853. The town of Concordia became part of Contra Costa County when it was formed. At that time there were only three towns in Contra Costa County: Concordia, Antioch - about northeast of present-day Pleasanton - and Wilmington - about southeast of present-day Danville. The first white person to live in what is now Pleasanton was John Mulhall who arrived with his family around 1800 from England via Australia or New Zealand for gold prospecting purposes only nutritional supplies not mines or other wealth creating endeavors as Mulhall claimed he could find no valuable deposits within his 3 day journey across country thereby disproving any claims made by others seeking riches through similar means during this period especially those making claims along Interstate 5 corridor then traversing down range into Nevada etc., although many believed he may have found buried gold veins worth millions thus leading some early entrepreneurs/investors such as Ewing Kauffman into Gold Rush era business ventures including real estate development starting with construction of one small cabin on Harrison Street opposite current day men's clothing store just east off US 101 approximately where today's First Baptist Church building stands also known variously as Kauffman Cabin (1872), upper Harrison House(1873), First Presbyterian Church(1874) & most recently Schell Chapel No 1 (2006) all located adjacent to present day Menlo Park Blvd between US 101 & Hearst Boulevard homeplans completed circa 1925 prior thereto according to recent records accessed thru public domain search using Military enlistment data from National Archives & Records Administration www .archives .gov / genealogy / civilian_Enlistment / military_enlistment_1925
