The City of Pleasanton was incorporated on November 15, 1906. The original site of present-day Pleasanton was part of an agricultural district that stretched from Walnut Creek to Jackrabbit Valley. A large water well near the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Third Street led to the development of what is now downtown Pleasanton when it opened in 1881. In 1893, George Wernham developed a grocery store and service station at 4th and Wilmington Streets which became known as Wernham's Station including later its famous neon sign. In 1901, several farmers banded together to form the Agricultural Society of Contra Costa County which purchased land east of Interstate 80 between Woolsey Boulevard and Highway 12 (present day Elk Grove Road). On December 14th this society organized a meeting at the Masonic Temple to discuss how they were going to improve their lot for farming purposes within their new boundaries with about 50 attendees including prominent citizens such as Mayor Fenton Carter and Supervisor John Puckey from San Francisco - making it one of the earliest planning meetings ever held within Contra Costa County! At another meeting on January 7th 1903 failed attempts were made by six other groups including those from Pittsburg and Antioch to organize similar meetings throughout Contra Costa County with mixed results before finally successively approving an organizational charter effective February 6th with Drs Charles Hakeman (Dragons Den) President/CEO & Harry Slatkin Treasurer/Secretary! This marked the beginning of what would become known as "The pleasantON Settlement" Although initial efforts were focused on developing citrus crops such as oranges or apples trees however over time more focus turned towards manufacturing goods like automobiles parts etc., eventually leading to establishment of numerous businesses across various sectors including apparel retailing center GMC ([now] Macy's], software company Oracle (now Salesforce) Headquarters), three medical clinics (One closed due fire two reopened), heavy engineering Company Bechtel Haas AG ([now] Bechtel Corning]), numerous small printing businesses along Elkhorn Ave.[now] Northgate Blvd[now]& [then] Menlo Park Blvd,[now] many light industrial establishments along I-880 corridor & major transportation hub - centered around BART facilities located just south Of Elkhorn Ave; today we have over 150 business categories represented with over $130B annual revenue the current Downtown area has seen significant redevelopment since 1998 when USDOT moved their headquarters from Oakland into what is now called South Plaza Tower & began plans for 5 stories downtown followed by additional floors in 2000 thru 2006 then again increased height thru 2013 reaching almost 350’ tall A total area redevelopment has occurred encompassing: 2 blocks north fromAshby BART station allthe way uptoWilloughby Rd; nearly 3 acres west sideSRTA line right next doortoDowntownPleasanton; more than 8 acres southeast cornerofSouth Plaza Towerand Eastside streets adjacentto USF& UC campus; almost 9 acres southwest cornerofSouth Plaza Towerand Westside streets adjacentto Kaiser Permanente hospitalAll developments are contained within one single plan deduced through analysis & study completed 10 years ago
