Pleasanton is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 9,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were Spanish traders and missionaries who founded missions in 1789. A post office was established at present-day Pleasanton on May 25, 1854, and the name became current when a railroad named the Pacific Railroad came through the area in 1868. In 1915, local Prohibitionist mayor John Findlay vetoed a city charter application that would have made Pleasanton an alcoholic beverage licensees town. The voteuated against liquor because it would have been detrimental to their economy which depended on tourism from nearby cities like San Francisco and Oakland. In 1923 Mayor Harry Chandler applied for and received a liquor license for his new city of Hillsborough which was west of Pleasanton on Interstate 580. A prohibition amendment was passed by the California state legislature in 1933 and began enforcement that year; however, by 1934 all but two of Contra Costa's 24 villages had adopted prohibition similar to that found throughout most of Northern California except for Danville where anti-prohibition sentiment ran high due to traditional ties with neighboring Napa Valley wine country. As a result, moderate alcohol consumption continued until about 1990 despite Proposition M (1987), which repealed statewide prohibition in order to legalize cannabis production and sales within Californian borders as well as establish regulations regulating smoking indoors and growing plants recreationally across state lines without prior authorization from state government officials or local authorities).
