Pleasanton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 53,653 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of San Francisco Bay and is part of the Silicon Valley region. Pleasanton is home to numerous software companies and technology firms such as Apple Inc., Googleplex and Oracle Corporation. The city's proximity to Silicon Valley has led to its nickname "The Silicon Valley of the East Bay". Pleasanton was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and his family as a small agricultural settlement on marshland at the foot of Mount Diablo. In 1907, after years of growth in land use and population due to new transportation connections through its location on Highway 1 (later Interstate 80), Pleasanton incorporated as a city with a population of 50,000. In 1959, when Interstate 680 became I-680 eastbound between Berkeley and Concord via south exit lane designation (Exit 7), it became apparent that I-680 would soon become an important artery for the eastern half of Contra Costa County. A solution had been found: To create two lanes for each direction in each direction north/south of existing I-880 east/west within City limits (I-880 becomes Boulevard Street after exiting from City Limits), creating what would become known colloquially as "The Scenic Byway" or simply "The Byway". This project was completed successfully without incident in 1960; henceforth The Scenic Byway roadway designation applied only to portions within City limits where traffic congestion warranted it - typically during rush hours north/south along I-880 corridor between Livermore and Walnut Creek). As various businesses relocated out into newly developed areas closer to downtown or outside City limits over time – some resulting in large increases in housing prices – it became increasingly difficult for merchants located inside Downtown District No 2 or adjacent Business Districts 1 & 2 ( collectively referred to herein as "Downtown") to compete with those located outside these districts who were able to access improved public transportation links including BART stations just minutes away or easy access to freeway exits directly off Interstate 680 throughout most days during peak commuting hours (I-680 corridor west from downtownSan Pablo Avenue east terminated at SR 99 west interchange). As late as 1984 there remained approximately 100 active business districts within Downtown District No 2 while less than 10 existed within Business District 1 & 2; all but one being functioned independently albeit sharing some common characteristics including limited retail space available on either side of busy streets adjacent thereto generally composed largely by office buildings converted from residential zoning earlier that decade notwithstanding efforts by Mayor Dianne Feinstein et al. spearheaded by then Mayor Tom Bates seeking more mixed use development near BART stations rather than single purpose commercial uses oriented towards driving traffic onto busy arterial corridors). Despite this situation efforts were made over ensuing years culminating with establishment in 1990of DowntownDistrictNo2A reincorporating much enlarged portions formerly comprising BusinessDistrict1&2 thereby providing similar comprehensive services albeit now administered separately under separate leaderships Notwithstanding recent trends concerning increasing concentration within several key commercial areas near BART stations relative Fremont Street rapid growth - this once again indicates need for continuing collaborative effort among various government entities involved with governing

That same year Packing Company Trucking Company bought 6 acres (2 ha) in what is now downtown for $1 million dollars which turned out to be their largest acquisition ever due to its potential development into an industrial center with heavy truck traffic. In 1912 they built their first building which still stands today - The Municipal Building - across from City Hall. A new annexation occurred in 1916 when portions of Hercules were annexed into Pleasanton making it up to 10,000 residents by that point In 1923 he company bought even more land - this time 8 square blocks (480 m²) for $5 million dollars; this would become their biggest acquisition yet because it included most of the present-day business districts within walking distance of each other including downtown and MacArthur Boulevard . Over time many buildings have been erected here including: In 1951 General Motors announced plans for a massive factory relocation adjacent to Menlo Park but due to protests from local citizens they pulled back those plans only after receiving assurances from Mayor Arnold Schwarzenegger that no public funds would be used without prior consent from voters in neighboring cities like Palo Alto and Safeway who would also benefit financially from the factory redevelopment project

In 1846, the first permanent settler in Pleasanton was George H. Smith. By 1850, there were twenty-three residents and two businesses. The town received its name from General Mariano Vallejo, who named it for his Rancho de las Animas. In 1857, the first school was built and by 1861, there were four schools in the town. There were also three churches in Pleasanton at that time: one Baptist, one Methodist and one Catholic. The railroad arrived in 1870 and by 1887, the town had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1898, Pleasanton hosted its first annual fair which attracted more than $10,000 in revenue. In 1916 the city of San Francisco annexed Pleasanton making it an incorporated city with a Mayor and City Council system as well as a Works Progress Administration program to provide employment opportunities for local citizens.
