Pleasanton, California is a small city in El Dorado County, California. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and south of Fresno. Pleasanton is home to the University of California at Davis and many other businesses and institutions. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1837. A post office called "Pleasanton" was established in 1851, but it was discontinued in 1865 due to its uncertain location. The town site was platted by Elisha Cox in 1875, but no buildings were erected until after he won an election as Mayor against incumbent Hiram Jepson. In 1906, a railroad line was built through Pleasanton from Fresno to Dixonville, CA with a station called "Pleasanton Junction". The same year saw the opening of Alameda County's first store, which became known as "Alameda General Store". In 1912 began construction on what would become UC Davis campus; today's campus dates back to that time. In 1916 Japanese American soldiers who had been interned during World War I staged a peaceful demonstration near City Hall Park; they were later arrested and charged with conspiracy. This event helped spur passage of Proposition 8 (Proposition 6), which banned gay marriage statewide in Californias then-new state of California. As Silicon Valley grew more technologically advanced over ensuing decades, so too did Pleasanton's economy -heavy industry such as aerospace manufacturing moved out while strong agriculture remained until recently when technology has led to increased production for local farmers across both sectors R&D remains active throughout much of downtown & surrounding neighborhoods

Pleasanton is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Central Valley and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the south, Antioch to the east, Oakland to the north and Menlo Park to the west. According to The Daily Californian's 2007 study of "America's Fastest-Growing Cities", Pleasanton has become one of Silicon Valley's newest centres for technology companies and has quickly become an affluent suburb with a high concentration of wealthy people. The first known inhabitants of what is now Pleasanton date back 3,000 years ago when Native Americans lived there as part of the Ohlone people. When Spanish missionaries arrived in 1769, they founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (now Mission Dolores) on land that now includes parts of Pleasanton. In 1821, Alameda County was formed from part of Contra Costa County and it was through this county that John Cranch became its first justice of peace. In 1849, following gold discoveries at Sutterville and Fillmore Gulch in Northern California, many farmers moved into what is now Pleasanton from nearby Vallejo because they could afford it. By 1860,[1] most residents were Anglo-Saxons who had come looking for new farmland after fleeing slave-driven cotton plantations in southeastern Georgia during the American Civil War.[2] In 1865,[3] four men – Hiram Maximoff (founder and president), George Westinghouse (president), Charles Goodyear (vice president) – founded General Electric Company in downtown Newark on Delaware Avenue using money they had won as salespeople for their products including batteries and radios.[4][5] This company soon became one of America's largest manufacturers with plants in major cities such as Philadelphia (1902), Syracuse (1904), Detroit (1906), Buffalo (1907) and Newark(1910). GE also developed oil production near Martinez which began producing gasoline fuel oil for automobiles in 1907[6][7][8] before becoming a publicly traded company listed on Wall Street under its original name: GEICO.[9][10] As America increasingly industrialized during World War II,[11][12] commercial production relocated from New York City to sites throughout California including Willits,[13] Gilroy,[14][15], Tomales Island[16], Livermore Falls[17],[18], Redding[19],[20], Stockton[21]), Modesto [22],[23], Fremont [24], etc., while government research centers such as Brown University’s Laboratory School at San Jose State appeared throughout Greater Bay Area towns like Hayward[25],[26]; Richmond Heights [27]; Hercules [28]; Belmont Shore Beach [29]; Northvale; Menlo Park; Sunnyvale; Cupertino; Palo Alto; Burlingame; Mountain View ; Saratoga Springs
Pleasanton was founded in 1868 by George H. Shepard and was the original town in Contra Costa County. The name of the town comes from a location called Pleasant Valley, which is now encompassed by the city of San Pablo.
