Pleasanton is a city in northern California, located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula. It is bordered by Contra Costa County to the south and east, Alameda County to the north, and San Mateo County to the west. As of 2010, its population was 116,782. The city was founded in 1851 as a small town on horseback between Concord and Oakland. In 1868 it became part of Berkeley before becoming incorporated as a city in 1906. One of the most significant moments in Pleasanton's history came on November 5th, 1952 when John F Kennedy won his election as President of the United States against incumbent Dwight D Eisenhower. PACAs (Public Access Channel Areas) were introduced into American television regulation during this time and were used as advertising platforms for businesses to reach more customers. One such example was KGO-TV who aired an ad campaign entitled “You Can Chalk It Up To The Pre-K program” which featured children playing in parkways throughout town before concluding with a show at KGO’s studios. This type of marketing strategy became known as image management or PPM because it involved using pre-recorded visuals instead of live programming to create an atmosphere that promoted sales or increased viewership for programs airing on local TV stations statewide

According to the United States Census Bureau, Pleasanton has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The first permanent settler in Pleasanton was John Doherty who arrived on July 10, 1847 as part of the Mission Dolores party. He named his new settlement after Mount Pleasant in England where he had been born and raised. Doherty's daughter married Californian prospector George Hearn and they moved to what is now Pleasanton when their child was born in 1850. In 1851, Drury & Co., merchants from Dublin, Ireland started trading with Native Americans near present-day Hwy 101 and Mowry Road. In 1852 they built a store on what is now First Street between Harrison andbrake roads west of present day Peconic Bay Boulevard In 1857 Captain Emmons bought Rancho Rincon de la Costa from Manuel Nieto for $4000 In 1860 Captain Emmons sold Rincon de la Costa to Juana Baca for $8000 A year later she married José María Ortega y Gasset who also purchased Rincon de la Costa from Captain Emmons .Ortega y Gasset named his farm La Isla after Isla del Fuego off Argentina where he had been living since1849 while working as an overseer on several British estates ).La Isla became part of the new town of Pleasanton when it was platted on October 14th 1861 by additionslottery under state law No 5491 .Pleasanton started out as an agricultural district but soon diversified into manufacturing including machine shops, foundries etc.. By 1920 there were over 100 businesses operating inpleasanton with a payroll totaling over $1 million... during World War II many companies lost their jobs due to rationing however most reemerged once war ended.. After World War II many businesses closed but some such as Alcoa returned to operation eventually becoming one of America’s largest aluminum manufacturers
Pleasanton was the site of the first railroad junction in Northern California. The first train came through here on October 24, 1849, from Stockton to Redding.
