It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and was named after Pleasant Hill, Massachusetts. A post office has been in operation in Pleasanton since 1872. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1807 and 1808. They discovered an area that would become known as "Pleasanton" because of its natural beauty—a valley with rolling hills and fertile soil watered by two small rivers. The land was offered for sale to John Sutter on July 12, 1825. In 1839, James Humboldt explored the bay shoreline near present-day Pleasanton and mentioned "the most beautiful place I ever saw". In 1840–41 Cesar Chavez engaged in a cattle drive from Stockton to Monterey Peninsula via the route he had followed earlier that year. His herd reached Rancho Buena Vista about 20 miles north of present-day Pleasanton when they were met by Mexican authorities who drove them back into Mexico City without water or food. At this time it was illegal for Americans to cross over into Mexico without diplomatic permission; so Chavez's group crossed the border using an improvised crossing nearpresent-day Balboa Park before reaching their destination unharmed. A post office called "Newstead" was established at what is now Newhall Avenue in 1850, but it became apparent that no one wanted to deliver mail there because of the distance from downtown San Francisco; so it was renamed "Pleasanton." On November 14, 1852, a new building located at 5th Street and Broadway opened as our first regular post office; it remained open until 1907 when it moved to its current location at 10th Street/Broadway due to growing population density within town limits warranted more space for processing mail than could be accommodated inside the original building (see also: map). The name “Pleasanton” would remain with our community until 1951 when we changed our name to “San Francisco” pursuant to Board Resolution No.(B) dated October 15th 1951 which stated that “The old name ofPLEASANTON should not continue any longer as there are too many other places with similar names throughout Northern California having nothing whatsoever do with PLEASANTON” After much thought by various residents both inside and outside OFFRESTSIDE SAN FRANCISCO we decided THAT THE NEW NAME SHOULD BE SOMETHING WITH MORE OF A MEMORY OF US BACK IN THE DAY WHEN WE WERE LOCATED RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY AND KNEW EVERYONE BY NAME FROM BEFORE WE BROKE FREE FROM MEXICO
