Pleasanton is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 24,032 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the San Joaquin River and is part of the Modesto metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of this area were the Costigan people who lived on an acacia-wooded peninsula that juts out into the river. In 1845, prospectors found gold near present-day Pleasanton and named it after their recently departed leader, Captain John Sutter (1785-1849). A town site was surveyed in 1848 by Major George C. Perkins and named for General James K. Polk (1813-1847), Commander in Chief of American forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1870, a group of wealthy citizens bought land east ofpresent-day Pleasanton from the Costigan people for $1 per acre ($20 to $40 per lot). They founded what would become known as Northern Pacific Railroad Company lands west of Pleasanton Creek on what is now Warm Springs Road (now Interstate 80). On May 5, 1872, they erected a pioneer style frame schoolhouse at 118 Neches Ave., later renamed Park Elementary School; it served as their primary educational facility until 1923 when Northern Pacific Railroad Co.'s main line crossed through town and supplanted all local schools as public education moved away from developer control towards state government control. The following year saw construction begin on what would be today's Municipal Building; it replaced an old adobe courthouse which had been used as a court house since 1798 when Nevada County was first organized within Stanislaus County. After years of struggle with various road builders over access to unique downtown blocks including parts of present day Hayward and Union City Streets--the result being oneof America's most expensive real estate transactions ever--Northern Pacific Railway Company Lands finally came under railroad ownership in 1902 just north of Present Day Pleasanton across from Warm Springs Road where development now occurs primarily along I-80 between Livermore Avenue and Highway 12th Street mainline interchanges with Amtrak Train Station in Livermore Valley . North Railways era ended abruptly with World War II when all trackage southward from Sacramento ended due to wartime restrictions against tankers traveling through inland waters without prior ship clearance; however additional tracks were built northeastward parallel to I-80 concurrent with general war efforts leading up to Hiroshima atomic bombing days more than 50 miles distant
