Pleasanton is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and has a diverse culture as well as its own small shopping district. The first person to call Pleasanton "Pleasanton" was Captain John Sutter who landed there with his mission party on November 27, 1847. The name may have been derived from the word "pleasant," meaning flower or sweet smell. In 1851, the townsite of Pleasanton and three other sites were chosen by an act of the California State Legislature for what would become Contra Costa County. The site for Pleasanton was laid out by Ebenezer Ewing and included parts of what are now Walnut Creek, Brentwood, Hercules and Concord Village before becoming part of San Pablo Avenue and Alameda Street neighborhoods today. The first post office in Pleasanton was established on January 1, 1850. In 1860, Mrs. Julia Roe opened her grocery store at 26th & Mission Streets which became known as Roe's Grocery Co-operative Store until it closed in 1978 when it merged with Safeway Incorporated to form Safeway Incorporation & Company (Safeway). From 1865 until 1870, one Mr./Mrs. Hahn operated a bakery called "The Baking Shop." This business is still open at 5th & Cedar streets but now specializes in vegan baking products under the name Earth Bake LLC catering to individuals/groups who reduce their environmental impact while eating healthily; they offer birthday cakes too! In 1872–73 local physician Drs., James Fenton and George Prentice performed surgery on Claim 795 near where Livermore Road meets Interstate 280 east of town limits - this area is now home to various businesses including Applebees BBQ restaurant (now known as Carrabba's) responsible for some $2 billion worth in sales annually statewide alone!
