Pleasanton is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 61,569 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Contra Costa County and the 15th largest city in California. The estimated population of the City of Pleasanton for 2019 was 78,718 Pleasanton was first settled by Europeans in 1839 as part of Rancho San Lorenzo de la Garza. It became a town on January 1, 1851 when it was incorporated as a village. On February 14, 1903, it merged with nearby Milpitas to form the current City of Pleasanton. The name "Pleasanton" derives from an old Spanish word meaning "pleasant country." The original inhabitants were Native Americans who lived near what is now Pleasanton Creek and their descendants still live there today. In 1839 Antonio Valenzuela explored and named this area after his home province of Moravia in northeast Czechoslovakia - he thought that its gentle hills would make a good place to settle because they weren't subject to bad weather conditions like those found in other parts of California. When he brought his family here he noted that they didn't have any trouble with diseases such as smallpox which had decimated many natives during the 1800s across North America due to contact with European settlers. Although some people believed that Valenzuela's wife may have been responsible for bringing Smallpox to America (she married one of his business partners), no evidence supports this theory and there is currently no evidence connecting her to either event whatsoever. In 1851 Englishman John Cranch established himself along Hwy 101 north of present day Pleasanton Creek/Highway 680 about 6 miles from where Valenzuela had first landovered; Cranch called this landing point Antelope Cove because there wasn't any suitable land elsewhere within 10 miles or so for him to build his adobe cabin/grainshed warehouse until he discovered Antelope Valley adjacent today's agricultural community known as Livermore Valley (originally called Happy Valley). Thereafter Anthony Daly started building adobe huts at Livermore Valley and over time various other farmers also began settling around these initial farmsteads including Jno Herrick who built an extensive vineyard south east of Livermore Valley between 1865-1875 & another early settler George Baker who built several hundred acres just northeastofpresentday Pismo Beach along Hwy 101 then farmed until 1886 when he sold all his holdings & moved back into Livermore Valley becoming one ofenosupervising farmer general throughout much OF Northern CA wine production during latter part period aka “the Golden Age” OfCalifornia Vineyards). Pleasanton, California was once a small farming community located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. Today, the city is home to over 200,000 people and is one of the most populous cities in Northern California. The area that now makes up Pleasanton was first settled by Spaniards in the late 18th century. By 1850, it had become a part of the United States and by 1865, it had become an incorporated town. The population of Pleasanton grew rapidly during the 20th century due to its location close to major metropolitan areas and its status as an agricultural center. In recent decades, however, Pleasanton has undergone a transformation which has seen it emerge as one of Silicon Valley's most prominent communities. The history of Pleasanton began with its incorporation as a town in 1865. At that time, it consisted only of a few scattered farmhouses and was relatively rural compared to other American towns at this time. The early years of town were difficult for both residents and businesses because there was little infrastructure available to support them. This lack of resources led to what may be considered its initial success: rapid growth in business activity and population throughout the 1870s and 1880s. One reason for this growth was doubtless due to goods brought overland from Europe via Stagecoach Road: many farmers found new markets for their produce thanks to this route. During these years, however, another important factor contributed significantly to Pleasanton's development: railroad transportation became available through nearby San Francisco Bayou crossings Gate City Path and North Coast Railroad tracks. This change not only made traveling between San Francisco and other parts of Northern California much easier but also created new opportunities for businesses within town limits; for example, wagon companies such as Sprague & Company began importing goods from outside America more frequently thanks to rail service intotown (see photograph). Thanks also went into play some key players in local politics; among these were two men who would make significant contributions during their careers–George WASHINGTON JR., Mayor from 1884-1892 and John SUSANNAKIN Jr., Mayor from 1898-1901 (see Figures 1-2). Together they helped lay the groundwork for what would later become known as "the downtown" area around Main Street/Folsom Street (now Sacramento Street), bounded on the north by Geary Boulevard/Washington Blvd., on the east by Folsom Street/Euclid Avenue (now El Camino Real), on the south by Interstate 80/South Hayward Boulevard (now SR 280)and on the west by State Route 24/New Beijing Road (Now I-680). In 1892 Washington relocated his family from New York City permanently so they could lead an active life in Santa Clara County; he would remain mayor until his death in 1901.) During his tenure as mayor various important changes took place within town including expanding city services such as firefighting efforts along with increased infrastructure investment such as a waterworks system And paved streets Additionally he spearheaded economic development initiatives such as creating employment opportunities through manufacturing ventures Finally he helped create oneof Silicon Valley's earliest suburbs – Willow Grove – which today remains one of America'slargest concentration centers for computer technology research
Pleasanton was founded by James H. Richardson in 1849 as a small agricultural town on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. In 1852, Richardson and his brother-in-law, John B. Shriver, bought 8,000 acres (3 km2) of land along the San Andreas Fault in what is now northern Santa Clara County. They named their new town Pleasanton after a grove of trees near their home. The first post office opened in November 1853. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as people fromSanta Clara County moved to Pleasanton to raise cotton and other crops. By 1870, Pleasanton had a population of about 775 people. That year, the United States Congress passed an act that granted township status to Pleasanton. The first election for township trustees was held in October 1870. At that time, there were only six residents living in Pleasanton full time: five men and one woman who ran as Town Trustees and one man who served as clerk of court. During the early years of townshiphood, most development took place on Richardsons land east of present-day Third Street and south of I Street between Napa Avenue and Central Avenue; this area is now known as Park Boulevard/Central Avenue Extension
