The first people to live in Pleasanton were the Hohokam, who built a small village on the east side of Coyote Creek in about 1800. The town was named for Captain Jonathan Folsom, commander of the California Battalion of Artillery during the Mexican–American War. A post office was established at Coyote Creek in 1824, and by 1827, Pleasanton had become a small town with a population of about fifty. In 1868, representatives from twenty-four cities across California gathered at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to establish the state capital of California. Andrew Johnson nominated John Cranch as the first governor of California; Cranch was elected without opposition and arrived in Sacramento on January 3, 1869. During Cranch's term as governor, several important events occurred including passage of the State Constitution which granted voting rights to women and set limits on property ownership among white men; passage of an act providing funding for public education; and completion of construction on San Francisco's Transcontinental Railroad. In 1870, Governor Cranch resigned due to ill health and was replaced by his successor James Buchanan Irvine. In 1880, Pleasanton experienced its most significant development when it became home to Packing House Hill (later renamed Mount Diablo), one of three hills in San Francisco that served as a landmark for railroad passengers taking trips between towns along the Peninsula Corridor. The hill eventually attracted more than 100 automobiles per day and became known as "The Porsche Hill." Pleasanton also enjoyed some success during its early years as a agricultural center with annual production totaling around two thousand acres yield for various crops such as corn, barley, cotton candy apples and other fruits or vegetables grown near water sources like Coyote Creek and Samish River. However, over time these activities gradually diminished as new industries began emerging such as steel manufacture or oil refining in nearby Richmond or Menlo Park.
