Pleasanton is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,827 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the banks of the San Joaquin River and forms part of the northern reaches of Oakland. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish traders in 1792. A mission was established here in 1824 by Father Francisco Sanchez and Father Juan Bautista de Anza, who also founded Rancho Central de Santa Clara which included Pleasanton. In 1853, John Sutter bought Rancho Central and erected a new house there called "Sutter's Fort". Pleasanton became an incorporated municipality in 1865. Loqueville & Co., a flour company based in Stockton, merged with Allis-Chalmers (later Chappell) Corporation in 1923 and moved their plant to Pleasanton from Hayward. The post office at Pleasanton opened on September 1, 1865, under the name "Loqueville". On November 15th of that year, it was changed to "Pleasanton" after J[ohn] F[rank] Q[urrell], the postmaster general of California. In 1927–28 when Interstate 5 was extended through Contra Costa County from Berkeley to Antioch via El Sobrante and Pittsburg Junction - then two days' ride away - Pleasanton had its own road built just east of I-5: US Route 101W/Foothill Boulevard ran through it from Alameda Street north over Elmira Road northeast to what is now Airport Boulevard;SR 99W/Foothill Boulevard ran from Airport Boulevard south over Elkridge Road northeast to I-580 near Walnut Creek;and SR 153E/Alamo Road ran from I-580 south past Walnut Creek into Livermore Valley until it overlapped I-580 at Happy Valley Road whereupon SR 153E turned east onto I-580 again before terminating at Livermore Valley border
