In 1873, a group of farmers in Pleasanton settled on the land that would become the city. One family – The Postalls – started selling newspapers from their home on High Street in 1865. In 1887 Benjamin Fenton established the first known attempts at marketing cannabis oil through sales from his Well & Oil store (later renamed Benjamins) on First Street near downtown Pleasanton. At this time cannabis still was illegal under state law but many people found it helpful for medical purposes during times of stress or anxiety. After Fenton's unsuccessful efforts at marketing cannabis oil he switched his focus towards coal mining instead until 1938 when he developed an automated assay system for separating coal tar from coal using a hot gas stream.. In 1941 Charles Evans Hughes became interested in developinga nearby airport so he decided to purchase lands adjacent to Pacheco Valley Airport where he would construct an airfield with runways suitable for both planes and helicopters with support facilities including barracks accommodation for pilots/pilots/engineers etc., hangar space for storage of aircraft components etc., while also constructing office buildings above the airport village which would house various aviation-related businesses such as airlines ticket counters/ticket agents etc.; all this took place within only two years following Hughes purchase of additional parcels along Highway 12 between Amador Valley Road (now part of I-580) northward into town limits; today's eastern edge of town bounds up Amador Valley Road NE In 1952 physician Doctor Milton Sussman opened Sussman Medical Clinic which became one of America's leading pain clinics soon offering services such as: general practice、urology、herbalism、cardiology、ophthalmology The Towne Centre mallopened adjacentto Sussman Medical Clinic ()in 1955 with over 200 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Co., Macy’s Incorporated (), Bebe’s clothing store ();Kmart (); Anchor Auctions (). Despite this challenge, Mayor Goodwin led the effort to build what would become one of Northern California's largest cities with a population over 100,000 people- something that had never been done before in this area. Over time, Pleasanton has undergone many changes both within itself (due to annexation by other municipalities) as well as annexation into other municipalities including Daly City (1948), North Beach (1951), South Park (1973), Financial District (1994), Potrero Hill(1999) and around them still continues to grow with new developments such as Progressive Field - now home to MLB's Oakland Athletics - Belmont Park - home to the Los Angeles Dodgers - and much more!
