In 1848, California was first granted as part of the United States of America to what is now known as the State of California. The area that would become Pleasanton was included in this grant and it was named after Captain John Sutter, who founded the city of Stockton in 1849. In 1852, Pleasanton became a station on the Central Pacific Railroad and soon became a small town with few residents. However, by 1870, when the railroad reached its final destination in Sacramento,California, Pleasanton had grown into a sizable settlement with over 10,000 people. For many years until World War II, Pleasanton was one of the most heavily populated areas in Northern California due to its location near major transportation hubs and its access to other goods and services. However, because of population growth and development elsewhere within Northern California during this time period (particularly in San Francisco), Pleasanton slowly lost some of its importance over time.
Pleasanton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 36,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and about 20 miles (30 km) east of San Francisco. Pleasanton is home to the largest concentration of Honda automobiles in the world. The first permanent settlement in what is now Pleasanton was made by men from East Bay City, California on August 16, 1853 when they erected a palisade around their small cabin which they named "Homespun" after themselves and their families. The town site was surveyed by Robert H. Morse on March 17, 1854 and it became incorporated as a city on April 14, 1857 with a population of 10 residents. The economic development of Pleasanton began with railroads coming through town in the 1860s and 1870s connecting it to nearby Fremont and Redding. Two large factories were built here – American Bridge Company (later ABB) in 1875 and Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) in 1906 – both making heavy investments that helped create much of the downtown area today. The current name honors John Manton who served as mayor from 1951-1955 and 1955-1959; he also donated land for a new park near his old home which still stands today - Manton Park

Pleasanton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 46,813 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Contra Costa County and the largest city east of San Francisco. Pleasanton is located on the intersection of State Route 12 and Interstate 80. The first people to live in what is now Pleasanton were Native American tribe members who called it "Wah-ninni-yuh" (now spelled "Wanning"). In 1853, John Hargrave established a post office at what is now downtown Pleasanton with mail service from Sacramento. By 1870, there were twelve settlements in what would become Contra Costa County: Hastings, Fremont, Livermore, Belmont, Petaluma Bayview Heights/Pleasanton Junction (later part of Pittsburg), Pacifica (now committed to Hayward), Walnut Creek (now part of Sunnyvale), Antioch, Martinez and Pleasant Valley. The first post office in Contra Costa County was established at Weequahic in 1873 by James Phelan and named for General Sam Houston. At that time there were no roads or even towns within our boundaries; goods had to be transported by wagon or horseback across country much as it still is today! In 1876 James Phelan built the first railroad line through Contra Costa County which became known as the Holliday Telegraph Line because it connected Holliday aboard a steamship with Oakland just south of Stockton over water - this was also one of the earliest lines ever built! This early rail activity helped lay the groundwork for later industries such as agriculture and commerce that have thrived here ever since! One important factor that led to these early successes was Mrs. Susan Blythe's donation of land near her home on present day Embarcadero Road for a new townsite – this area would eventually become known as Downtown Pleasanton!
The town of Pleasanton was founded in 1859 by white settlers on land that is now the city of San Francisco. The first post office in the area was established in 1861, and the first store opened in 1865. The population of Pleasanton grew rapidly during its early years, reaching a peak of over 100 residents in 1875. However, the early days of Pleasanton were not without controversy; various groups protested against what they saw as Dakota and Mexican settlement within the town limits. Despite these challenges, the community continued to grow and develop until it attained municipal status in 1906. In 1916, Pleasanton joined the City of San Francisco, becoming one of its five founding communities.
