Pleasanton is located in Contra Costa County, California. The city was founded on November 12, 1876 by John H. Polk and named for his friend Colonel George Pleasant. After a campaign to get the name approved by the town board, Polk's wife gave birth to a daughter in the city on December 5, 1876 and it was officially renamed Pleasanton on January 1, 1877. The first post office in Pleasanton opened in 1879. The city experienced growth from its modest population of just over 100 people in 1880 to its current size of over 2,000 people by 1910. A large part of this growth came from new housing developments such as the Harrison subdivision which was built around the same time as McCourtney Park and other nearby villages. The 1920s were a difficult period for Pleasanton with many residents moving away during World War II because of the rationing of food that started after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. However, business began to rebound thereafter and by 1970 there were more than 3,500 residents living in Pleasanton proper compared to only 1,500 when it first became an incorporated city. In recent years much development has occurred within the limits of downtown including both residential and commercial areas along Pacheco Street between Second Street and Third Street which have led to increased traffic congestion but also created new opportunities for retail businesses and public art projects that have brought much-needed life back into one of San Francisco's most popular neighborhoods
